#1 China 2006
While working on the digital collage-series Freek Drent started traveling, collecting imagery and exploring China in 2006. Starting point for his first journey was Shanghai, the most populous and well developed city in mainland China. He documented his travels using a simple compact camera, looking for daily life topics, often focussing on details. This first part was supported by Centre for Visual Arts Rotterdam and The Art foundation Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
#2 China 2006
The second and third month he went westward and spent most of his time in Sichuan and Chongking province. Not only the eastern, upper Yangtze countryside, but especcialy the expanding cities, seemingly arising out of nowhere fascinated him. So did the magnificent, partly torn down and reconstructed industrial mega-city Chongqing.
#3 Cycling China 2007
In 2007 a bicycle trip was made, starting in Shanghai, upnorth along the ancient canals to Beijing. Not completely unexpected but still a difficult part of the journey was finding the way amongst a complicated, renewed and confusing road system. This made traveling cryptical but challenging. Shanghai, Jiangsu, Anhui, Shandong, Hebei and Peking provinces.
